Founder's Message

Welcome to the first issue of Biomatrica® News!

My wife, Judy Muller-Cohn, Ph.D., and I founded Biomatrica four years ago after Judy experienced a loss of 1,000 precious samples due to an equipment malfunction. As scientists, we knew there had to be a solution to sample storage that didn't involve an energy-dependent cold chain. We were inspired to develop a room-temperature sample stabilization system mimicking a naturally occurring phenomenon called anhydrobiosis. One of the products that utilizes this platform is RNAstable—read more about it below.

As Chief Scientific Officer of Biomatrica, one of my goals is to better understand how our products fit into your research so that we can develop new products and improve existing ones. I encourage you to participate in a scientific dialogue with us—email me at research@biomatrica.com with your thoughts about your research, specific applications, and sample stability needs.

Best regards,
Rolf Muller, Ph.D., Founder and Chief Scientific Officer

Stabilizing
E. coli Samples

Do you store E. coli strains? Are you working with plasmids? We are currently developing a product for room-temperature stability of E. coli and we would appreciate hearing your feedback. As a thank-you for sharing your views with us, we will send you a $5 Starbucks Card.*

Amplifying FFPE Tissue Samples Using PCRboost

Dr. Mina Kalantari of the Bernard Lab in the Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Department at University of California, Irvine uses PCRboost to tackle PCR of samples generated from FFPE tissues, an inherently difficult reaction. "With PCRboost, I obtained at least a fivefold increase in the amplification of formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) cervical cancer tissue samples compared to using water in a standard master mix," said Dr. Kalantari. "I start out with very small amounts of degraded DNA and then perform bisulfite modification for DNA methylation analysis, which leads to further degradation. Using PCRboost, I am now able to see bands that were invisible without it. PCRboost is very easy to use—you just add the reagent instead of water to your reaction mixture. I love the outcome!"

PCRboost enhances endpoint and reverse transcription-PCR performance fivefold or more, allowing you to amplify genomic DNA or RNA templates that haven't yielded results in the past and advancing research angles that were previously dead ends. Other applications where PCRboost is especially effective include trace samples (<1 ng), degraded samples, low copy transcripts, multiplexing (i.e., STR analysis), and samples containing inhibitory factors.

RNAstable enables you to store total RNA and poly(A) RNA samples at room temperature for months. Our studies show that sample stability is maintained and protected from degradation with RNAstable for the equivalent of 6 years. When analyzed with an Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer, there is no sample breakdown with sample stored in RNAstable as compared to a -80°C freezer control.

When you are ready to use your samples, 100% of the RNA can be recovered in 10 minutes or less and then used directly in downstream applications. RNAstable saves time, energy, and costs associated with conventional cold storage methods.

  • Protect RNA sample integrity
  • Fast—requires less than 2 minutes of hands-on time
  • Rapidly and completely recover samples—just add water
  • Use samples directly in downstream applications—no further purification
