Biomatrica Newsletter

Message from the Founders

Welcome to the December 2011 issue of the Biomatrica Newsletter.

At the 2011 Association of Molecular Pathologists (AMP) meeting in November, Biomatrica presented a poster on our latest technology – DRgard Blood – which preserves RNA and DNA in whole blood samples at room temperature. This product, which is scheduled for launch in 2012, represents a unique technology offering for the first-time, a single preservative for RNA and DNA in whole blood samples.

Also scheduled for release in 2012 are products to stabilize DNA in saliva samples (DNAgard Saliva), stabilization of DNA in whole blood (DNAgard Blood Tube) as well as our second generation of our industry-leading DNA stabilization technology – DNAstable Plus. These new products complement our existing offerings that support our core customers in research, biobanking, and forensics, by expanding into the diagnostics industry with devices for collecting, preserving and transporting biospecimens for diagnostic analysis. More information about these new products are described in this newsletter.

Best regards,

Judy Muller-Cohn, Ph. D.
Founder and CEO

Products in the News

The company had several exciting new products in the second half of 2011.

DNAstable® Blood 96-well plate

We recently announced the availability of our long-term blood stabilization reagent – DNAstable Blood – in a new 96 well plate format. In this format, up to 25µl of whole blood or buffy coat samples can be safely preserved for more than 12 years at ambient temperature. Recovery is about 1µg. Compared with traditional cellulose-based cards, DNA recovery from DNAstable Blood are 2.5X to 20X higher with more intact, high molecular weight, non-degraded DNA per well/tube.

DNAstable® Validation Kit

Biomatrica launched a new forensic validation kit for DNA storage and preservation. The kit is designed to enable the DNA section of a forensic laboratory to quickly and easily validate the long-term storage of DNA extracts at room temperature in Biomatrica’s DNAstable.  The kit and protocols meet the standard validation requirements established by the Scientific Working Group on DNA Analysis Methods(SWGDAM) and by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Quality Assurance Standards (FBI/QAS) for forensic DNA testing.

DNAstable® 96 tube plates (Matrix)

DNAstable is now available in either a 2D or alphanumeric 96-tube plate Matrix (ThermoFisher). These tubes come in 0.5ml (2D) or 0.75ml (alphanumeric) sizes and offer same level of storage and preservation efficiencies as the traditional microfuge tubes.

New Products in 2012

Below is a snapshot of several new products scheduled for release in 2012.

DNAgard® Blood Tube

Biomatrica will introduce a tube option of our blood DNA stabilization – DNAgard Blood Tube (RUO). These tubes now offer direct preservation of DNA in whole blood from collection site. Using basic venal puncture approach, up to 6ml of blood can be collected into these tubes. Blood DNA is preserved for up to 8 months at room temperature. For more information about this product, please check out this link.

DRgard® Blood Tube

Biomatrica will introduce a new ambient temperature-based preservation of DNA and RNA in whole blood samples in a single blood collection tube. This product preserves RNA for up to 2 weeks at room temperature followed by cold storage for longer preservation, representing the longest ambient preservative for blood RNA available in the market. The product will be available initially as a RUO product.

DNAgard® Saliva

In 2012, Biomatrica will launch our first saliva DNA preservative – DNAgard Saliva – for preservation of DNA in saliva for up to 1 year at room temperature. The product will be available in a collection device for collection, preservation and shipping of saliva samples at ambient temperatures. More details about this product will be available shortly.

DNAstable® Plus

This represents the next generation innovation to Biomatrica’s industry-leading long-term ambient temperature preservative for purified genomic DNA samples. This new product is offered in a very flexible format: (a) liquid only, (b) liquid-to-dry, or (c) dry-down matrix. Long-term preservation of DNA can be achieved either at room temperature, elevated temperatures (up to 85C), or in the cold (4C) without impact on quality or recovery. This flexible storage formats and extended range of temperatures offer a unique capability that meets and scales with needs for low-copy (forensics) or high volume (biobanking) storage and preservation of genomic DNA.
